What is pelvic floor therapy?
Pelvic floor therapy is a type of physiotherapy which specializes in the pelvic floor and surrounding muscles. The pelvic floor is a group of muscles which run from the pubic bone to the tail bone forming a basket shape. They work in tandem with your deep core muscles and have 5 main functions:
1. Bowel and bladder
2. Sexual function
3. Stability in the pelvis
4. Circulation
5. Support for internal organs
Pelvic floor therapy assesses these muscles with digital palpation, vaginally and/or rectally, to determine the cause of the issues (if you aren't comfortable with this, that's okay, we can still help).
The therapist then prescribes a treatment which can include education, manual therapy and exercises to help manage your issue.
