A pessary is a medical grade silicone device used as a conservative option for the management of pelvic organ prolapse and/or stress urinary incontinence. 

The effectiveness of the pessary depends on finding the right shape and size for you.

The initial consultation is 75 minutes. In this time we go through the following:

 

Step 1

We start with a conversation to understand your symptoms, medical history, and goals of treatment. We do an external and internal assessment to help guide us in choosing the right size and shape of pessary and to provide education to help further manage your symptoms. 

 

Step 2

Based on the internal exam, we select a pessary that we think will be best suited for you.

When we have found a good fit we ask you to go through a variety of movements and activities, including emptying the bladder, to ensure the fit is perfect for you.

We can try up to 3 pessaries per session. Sometimes another session may be required to get the appropriate fit for you.

Step 3

We review how to insert, remove, clean and store your pessary as well as review ​signs and symptoms of when to seek medical attention from your healthcare provider.

 

​Step 4

Before we can order the pessary for you, you will need to see a medical practitioner such as a medical doctor or nurse practitioner in order to assess if you are safe for the use of the pessary. We will provide you with a form to take to your practitioner to help facilitate this session or this can be done before your initial visit.

Follow-up appointments consist of 30 or 45 minutes sessions to review your symptoms, receive and insert your new pessary  or remove and clean your current pessary,  assess for proper fit and inspect vaginal health.
